There is never a dull moment in the world of fashion and 2011 was no different. Let’s roll back the clock and look at the biggest headlines from nine years ago!
The demise of John Galliano
2011 saw the demise of John Galliano, the former head designer of Christian Dior. The British couture expert was caught having a racial outburst in a Paris bar. In September he was found guilty of making anti-Semitic remarks and was sentenced to pay €6,000 in suspended fines. The world of fashion and celebrity was outraged with Galliano’s behaviour.
Natalie Portman said:
“I am deeply shocked and disgusted by the video of John Galliano’s comments that surfaced today…I hope at the very least, these terrible comments remind us to reflect and act upon combating these still-existing prejudices that are the opposite of all that is beautiful.”
Needless to say, Dior sacked Galliano. The current creative director for Dior is Maria Grazia Chiuri.
Andrej Pejić graced the runway in both menswear and womenswear
Another male that made fashion headlines for very different reasons was 20-year-old Andrej Pejić. The Australian model raised eyebrows by gracing the runway in both menswear and womenswear throughout 2011. Pejić modeled male clothing for the likes of Marc Jacobs and women’s wear for Jeremy Scott and Jean-Paul Gaultier. The androgynous model has also been on the cover of elite Canadian magazine ‘FASHION’.
Donatella Versace and H&M teamed up
High fashion became available to us all as Donatella Versace announced she would be designing for high-street favourite H&M. The move was deemed a risky one for the Italian fashion label with the New York Metro saying: “If it’s done incorrectly, it can look like Versace is pandering to the mass market in order to remain relevant… Versace has more to lose.” The collection received mixed reviews amongst fashion critics, however, it’s done well enough for a second collaboration with the Swedish retail clothing company. The cruise collection S/S 2012 was announced soon after. Since then, H&M has gone on to team up with a number of big fashion names. The most recent being H&M x Giambattista Valli. Since then, we have seen so many brands meld high-street and designer. The market for prescription sunglasses is an excellent example of this.
The bust-up of the year was over every girl’s favourite thing; shoes
Finally, the bust-up of the year was over every girl’s favourite thing; shoes. The battle of the red-soles saw fashion giants Louboutin and Yves Saint Laurent at war. The famous French footwear designer, Christain Louboutin, lost his bid to stop fellow French fashion giant YSL from selling red-soled shoes in August. However, this feud is far from over with Louboutin determined to stop brands from copying his trademark red sole. It’s a battle the brand will be battling forever!
