How to make a little extra money!

August 27, 2015 by Olivia Leave a Comment

Hello Lovelies!

As long as I remember I have been very money oriented. When I was younger, it was clear I was going to be a business major with my entrepreneurial spirit. From creating cleaning services, a pet sitting company, and lemonade stands, you name it, I probably made a company for it. Fast forward to my college years living off of fried eggs on toast and avocados with Tapatio, I have learned a couple of easy ways to make a little extra cash.

Side Note: Being so money-focused, I am also a very frugal person (which is good and bad). I definitely do not have a spending problem (snaps for me), and during the summer when I am working 40 hours a week, most of my paycheck goes directly to savings (#responsible). However, if you’re like me, don’t forget to treat yourself every so often. If you are the opposite and spend money as soon as it hits your bank account, maybe these tips will also help you put a little extra cash aside into savings!

Sell your clothes on Poshmark!

I discovered Poshmark at the beginning of the summer and have sold a couple items so far! Although they take a 20% commission, you can still make a good amount of money. Next time you’re bored, go through your closet and pick out clothes that you don’t wear anymore. Take good quality pictures of the items and list them on the app. Tip: the better quality pictures and the more detailed descriptions give you an advantage! Check out my Poshmark Closet!
Care.com

Care.com is a website dedicated to finding babysitting and/or petsitting jobs in your area. More than likely you have experience in babysitting so it will be super easy to set up an account and start applying to jobs in your area. If you are too busy for a nannying job, look for listings for a date night sitter or a babysitter only on the weekends. Not only is the money you make from babysitting tax-free, you can make bank in just one night!
Sell your old textbooks!

If you have old textbooks from classes that you paid a fortune for, most likely you can sell them back. Chegg, Amazon, and even your campus bookstore have programs to sell back old textbooks. I usually use Chegg and not only is it super simple, they also pay for the shipping and send you a check as soon as they process the books. All you need to do is enter the ISBN numbers and Chegg will quote you a price. Note: sometimes you won’t get much for books, but it is better than them just sitting in your room. I would also look into selling textbooks on your class Facebook page or Free and For Sell page for your campus. If you are asking around your school, you will find someone who needs the textbook you are selling.
Garage sale with your roomies
I have only lived in my college house for a year and we have already accumulated a lot of junk. We have a shed and a closet filled with furniture and house decor we don’t need. Split up who owns what and have a mini garage sale. Advertise your garage sale on Craigslist and your campus Facebook pages to bring in a lot of traffic. This is most successful towards the end of the year because students moving from the dorms into apartments/houses are looking for discounted furniture and home essentials.
Turn your hobby into cash

Etsy is an amazing place for people with artistic talents. If you make jewelry, or typography, or anything remotely artistic you can make an Etsy shop. Start off small and only make a couple products to showcase. Market and advertise your creations on your various social media channels and you can gain recognition.
Be a Brand Ambassador
Brand ambassadors is a relatively new term on college campuses. Because our generation has a lot of purchasing power (and with our obsessive use with social media), companies are utilizing brand ambassadors to spread awareness about their product/service on college campuses. Zip Car, Red Bull, ASOS, and even Victoria’s Secret PINK have brand ambassador positions for college students. As a campus rep you’ll get free swag and a stipend or paycheck.
xoxo
